England, the 1520s. Henry VIII is on the throne, but has no heir. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor, charged with securing the divorce the pope refuses to grant. Into this atmosphere of distrust and need comes Thomas Cromwell, first as Wolsey's clerk, and later his successor.
This book is absolutely wonderful. From the opening scene, as young Thomas lies on the ground watching his father's boot come towards him, you know this is no run of the mill historical novel. The characters are so vividly brought to life and engaging, the politics they are involved with are so dangerous, the consequences of finding yourself on the wrong side of the religious arguments are so brutal, that I was totally absorbed. It's a long book, but I didn't want it to end.
