In this poignant comedy of early Victorian life, Elizabeth Gaskell explores the effects of Victorian commerce and imperial expansion on the survival of customs from earlier times. This up-to-date edition includes 2 shorter related works.
Melksham Library Book Group, September 2011 Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell Published in 1851, Mrs Gaskell followed other female authors before her by writing about the small town/village gossip as she knew it. There was no plot as such, just an insight into the lives of genteel women, or those with an income, with time on their hands. It lacked any real masculine characters. Everyone felt that the TV series detracted the reader too much by using famous actors, beautiful backdrops and other stories by Gaskell to make something of it. Beautifully written but boring for some and a difficult read for others. 4.5/10
