Hamburg, 1946. Charged with overseeing the rebuilding of this devastated city, Colonel Lewis Morgan is requisitioned a house, where he will be joined by his wife, Rachael, and son, Edmund. But rather than force its owners, a German widower and his daughter, to leave their home, he insists that the two families live together.
The Aftermath poses questions on many different levels. How did the British army view the defeated Germans? Did they all behave honourably? Colonel Morgan, a sensitive soldier who likes to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, makes an offer that none of the other officers would have dreamt of. This was a new insight into the post-war period which we knew nothing about, and the story cast a completely unexpected light on the events of those years. It provoked much discussion, even though we all enjoyed it. 9/10
