Absolutely brilliant short story collection; every one is a corker. A recurring theme is the misuse of wealth, power and authority, and the struggle of the individual in a world in which the odds are stacked against them. In that sense, it is a very political book. But more than that, it is a book that explores the choices available to the individual in every human action and, as such, is full of humanity. If you're not convinced, read the story called Love Letter first; it's fewer than 10 pages long, and if it doesn't move you, maybe this book is not for you.
